Silica - Paint industry

Silica (Silicon dioxide) is known for its many applications in the industry. In particular, with current paint products, Silica brings many features to the product such as:

1. Filler to improve physical properties

Silica is used as a filler to:

- Increase hardness, impact resistance, abrasion resistance of the paint film.

- Reduce film shrinkage, making the paint more durable when dry.

- Stabilize the structure of the paint film in different environmental conditions.

2. Thixotropic agent

Silica in the form of fumed silica (silica fume) is used to:

  • Increase the structural viscosity of the paint → the paint film does not sag during construction.
  • Helps the paint to be thicker but still easy to stir.
  • Creates thixotropic properties: the paint is thin when stirred, thick when standing still.

3. Increases opacity and light dispersion

Nano Silica in the form of superfine particles is used in:

  • Matte paint – helps control gloss.
  • Semi-matte, satin paint – creates a smooth surface feel.
  • Anti-glare paint for wood, metal, interior.

4. Increase chemical resistance - weather resistance

Chemically inert and UV resistant silica helps:

  • Increase resistance to aging and chalking.
  • Increase heat resistance (good for powder coating and heat-resistant paint).
  • Support to protect the binder from UV rays.

5. Improve anti-slip ability

Large size or granular silica is used in:

  • Anti-slip paint for industrial floors, stairs, ships.
  • Create surface roughness.

6. Stabilize glue, good dispersion

Nano silica helps:

  • Stabilize water and solvent systems.
  • Limit separation and pigment sedimentation.
  • Increase dispersion for color.

7. Increase coverage and reduce costs

As a filler:

  • Reduce the amount of binder or TiO₂ needed → helps to reduce costs.
  • Improve coverage due to good light dispersion.
