Applications of SiO2 in Silicon Sealant
Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is a very important ingredient in silicone sealants. However, its role is not as the main adhesive, but as a filler and mechanical property enhancer.
🧪 1. Basic ingredients of silicone sealants
Silicone sealants usually includes:
- Polysiloxane (mainly polydimethylsiloxane - PDMS): base ingredient, creates elasticity and heat resistance.
- Silicon dioxide (SiO₂): enhancing filler.
- Cutting agent: helps the glue dry and create a 3D polymer network.
- Catalyst, additives (anti-mold, color, improve adhesion...).
⚙️ 2. The role of SiO₂ in silicone sealants
- Increase mechanical strength: Silica helps increase the hardness, tensile strength and abrasion resistance of silicone sealants.
- Improve viscosity: Make the glue thicker and easier to apply.
- Structural stability: Helps the polymer not to sag or deform during curing.
🔬 3. SiO₂ form used to Silicone Sealants
- Fumed silica – super fine SiO₂, nano-sized particles (~10–40 nm).
→ This is the most common type in silicone sealants because it has a very large surface area, helping to increase the reinforcement efficiency.
- Precipitated silica – larger particles, used when increasing the density but not too transparent.
