Applications of Silica in Plant Protection Products

Fumed silica has many important applications in crop protection products (pesticides), mainly as an additive, not as a primary active ingredient.

1. Thickening agent – viscosity control

Used in formulations such as:

• SC (Suspension Concentrate)

• OD (Oil Dispersion)

• CS (Capsule Suspension)

Helps to:

• Prevent active ingredient settling

• Stabilize suspension systems

• Control flow behavior and viscosity

2. Anti-caking – anti-agglomeration agent

Highly effective in:

• WG / WDG (Water-Dispersible Granules)

• WP (Wettable Powder)

Functions by:

• Absorbing moisture

• Keeping powders dry, free-flowing, easy to spread and disperse

3. Carrier and dispersion enhancer

• Acts as a carrier for low-content active ingredients

• Improves rapid dispersion in water

• Reduces particle agglomeration

4. Improved adhesion and surface coverage

During spraying, it helps:

• Spray droplets spread evenly on leaf surfaces

• Reduce runoff and wash-off

5. Stability in oil-based solvents

In EC and OD formulations:

• Forms a light gel structure

• Limits phase separation between oil and active ingredients
