Application of Silica for printing inks

Silica (SiO₂) is an important additive used in printing inks for many types of inks such as offset inks, flexographic inks, gravure inks, and digital printing inks. Silica is usually used in the form of very fine powder, precipitated silica, or fumed silica.

Main functions of silica in printing inks

1. Anti-blocking agent

  • Silica creates microscopic roughness on the dried ink surface.

  • This helps printed sheets not stick to each other when stacked.

2. Rheology control

  • Silica acts as a thickening and structuring agent.

  • It helps maintain stable viscosity, preventing the ink from flowing too easily or separating.

3. Improves mechanical resistance

  • It enhances hardness and scratch resistance of the dried ink film.

4. Matting agent

  • Certain types of silica are used to reduce gloss and create a matte effect in ink or coating layers.

5. Improves pigment dispersion

  • The surface of silica can help stabilize pigment dispersion and reduce sedimentation.

Common types of silica used in printing inks

  1. Precipitated silica – commonly used in offset and flexo inks.

  2. Fumed silica – used mainly for strong viscosity control and anti-settling.

  3. Silica gel / matting silica – used for matte inks or coatings.
